We all want to look our best in our vacation snaps and that includes our accessories.
Sarah Rowlands of Pandora UK has put together the ultimate guide to holiday jewelery with top tips for protecting your jewelery from sunscreen, chlorine, sweat and even the sun.
If your suitcase is packed and you have your passport handy, check out this handy guide before you fly.
Pandora shares the best holiday tips to avoid damage to your jewelry
1. Use warm soapy water to clean your jewelry
If you fly to a sunny place, Pandora recommends this easy cleaning tip if and when your jewelry comes in contact with sand, sunscreen and more.
Sarah explained, “Your jewelry should never encounter agents such as perfume, salty air, skin creams and chlorine. If so, simply clean your jewelry with warm soapy water and a soft brush, but always make sure the jewelry is never submerged.
2. Do not wear jewelry in a swimming pool or in the sea
Taking your jewelry out of the equation before jumping in the pool or wading in the sea is the best way to protect it.
Pandora recommends that you check that you have stored your jewelry safely to avoid exposure to chlorine and salt water.
Sarah commented: “It is best to remove your jewelery if you plan to enter the sea or a swimming pool. Salt water and chlorine are harsh chemicals that can cause erosion, and exposure to these chemicals could weaken the precious metal and break your jewelry.

3. Keep your jewelry out of the sun
You might be surprised but our jewelry is vulnerable to UV rays just like us.
Pandora recommends: “We must always ensure that our jewelry is not exposed to UV light, natural sunlight or heat. Exposure to UV light can cause discoloration and may even lead to rapid deterioration of jewelry. This means we need to take extra care and remove jewelry if we sunbathe or are exposed to the sun for long periods of time.
4. Store your jewelry in a plastic zipper bag
Frequent flyers will be familiar with trial baggage restrictions limiting what we can pack for our overseas jaunts.
When it comes to storing our jewelry, Pandora suggests using a simple plastic zipper bag to help save space and keep your pieces safe.
Sarah explained, “As well as using a protective lined jewelry box, we can also store our jewelry in a zippered plastic, mylar or polythene bag. This is handy for vacationers who want to save space in their luggage, but it will also prevent your jewelry from getting scratched, tangled during travel and reduce exposure to air which could tarnish the quality.
We also have to stop storing our jewelry in the bathroom, warns Sarah.
She added, “It’s important that you don’t store your jewelry in the bathroom, as humidity promotes oxidation, which causes jewelry to lose its luster and color.”
